The serious movie poster collector has primarily concentrated on original movie poster art or theatre art from the movie theaters themselves. These movie posters are distributed to the theatres and then meant to be threw away as trash after use. This of course makes them extremely rare. Other categories of poster are commercial posters that are printed in large quantities for direct sale to the public. These include reprint posters. Video posters are not produced for the general public and are made for advertising material for video rental stores. Cable and tv posters are also not produced for the general public and are use as promotional material for tv stations for their programming. Lois and Clark and the X-files posters fit into this category. Collectors and fans of these series aren't really concerned that they don't fit into the theatre art category, but collect them due to their love of the show or rarity. Special promotion posters are also finding a collectors market even though not distributed directly to the theatres. These posters promote a movie along with a product. An example would be a Batman and Robin poster I have that has a Walmart and Fritolay logo on the bottom of the poster. Finally there are anniversary issues, limited editions and special releases that are released in limited quantities and are gaining favor with the theatre art collector. What about sizes? Just as in the promotional line of the Godzilla movie size does matter. Well one should be aware of the sizes anyway when shopping for collector's item posters. It's one way of determining the originals from the fakes. The one sheet usually comes 27" x 41". This was the first and most widely used poster. The subway also known as the two sheet is larger but not exactly two times the size of the one sheet. The 3 sheet is three times the size of the one sheet measuring at 41" x 81". The 6 sheet is six times the size of the one sheet measuring of 81" x 81". There is also a 12 sheet approximately twelve times the size of a one sheet, and the colossally sized 24 sheet measuring 246" x by 108" probably used in the promotion of Godzilla and King Kong movies. Finally usually much smaller than the one sheet in a variety of sizes is the mini sheet, and the stock sheet issued for cartoons or other shorts. Other types of movie posters include advance posters to promote a movie well ahead of the movie's release. The award poster which indicate a movie has won an Academy award. The combo poster with two movies instead of just one. The popular double-sided poster with art on both sides reversing the art work on one side of the poster. There are featurette posters highlighting short films or cartoons, review posters for when a movie gets a good review, serial posters for movie serials, and special distribution posters. Poster Value Movie posters values are determined by demand, rarity, and condition. Posters use the same grade system used by comic book collectors: mint (perfect), near mint, very good, good, fair, and poor. |
